RELIABLE REPAIRS WITH MODERN EQUIPMENT

"For us, every MC (Moving Coil) is a valuable asset entrusted by our customers, requiring the utmost care and meticulous repair."

Damper damage, including the protective lining for the coil and magnetic frame, can occur due to various reasons. Common causes include material aging and degradation after long-term use. However, through our repair experience, we have observed that the primary reason is improper use of cleaning solutions or chemicals during stylus maintenance.

Replacement and Restoration of Damper Systems

The damper system is critical and can be likened to the shock absorbers in a car—when it fails, its function is lost, and you can imagine the impact. For dampers, the materials used in their construction are crucial. They must be soft, durable, flexible, and elastic, ensuring proper support and stability. The damper works alongside the suspension wire to keep the coil accurately positioned, maintaining all components in their correct places when no vibration is present.

Each manufacturer has a unique design for dampers, with some MC cartridges using one or two dampers depending on the specific model.

When the Damper Loses Functionality

If the damper becomes aged, hardened, deformed, or deteriorates (e.g., melting or losing shape), it must be replaced with the correct or equivalent type. Without proper repair, your MC cartridge may stop functioning or operate in a way that risks damaging the coil (potentially rubbing against the magnetic gap). This can result in distorted sound, reduced tracking ability, and inaccurate playback, which could harm your LP records—particularly if the damper is hardened, a common issue in older EMT TSD cartridges.

Damper Replacement Process and Costs

The process of replacing the damper is similar to replacing the suspension wire, involving high complexity and precision. It requires the disassembly of all components (a "major surgery"). Once the replacement is complete, the cartridge is tested for tracking ability and all parameters are measured.

Replacement costs depend on the construction of the stylus, the type of damper (single or double), and the size:

  • For MC cartridges with large coil wires: 50$-100$

  • For MC cartridges with small wires or double dampers: 100$-150$

  • For cartridges with components bonded by adhesive, requiring complex disassembly: 150$-200$

  • For cartridges with gemstone casings: 400$-600$
